Commonwealth of Dominica: More Funds Made available for Geothermal Energy Development

Finance Minister Says Funds for Geothermal Plant Already Secured (GIS Dominica)

Dominica’s geothermal project, part of the Government’s plan to provide a more reliable and affordable source of energy to Dominicans, has received further funding to ensure completion.

The Hon. Minister for Finance, Prime Minister, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, while presenting the 2017/2018 National Budget on July 27th, revealed that these funds have been made available by the Government as well as other benefactors.

Prime Minister Skerrit noted that the environmental and social impact assessment for the 7 MW geothermal project is ongoing in the Roseau valley. The designs for the plant are progressing and should be completed by the third quarter of 2017.

Hon Skerrit informed that negotiations are ongoing with DOMLEC to finalize the terms of the power purchase agreement between the DGDC and DOMLEC. Negotiations are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
